The Wednesday Recital
Born in 1986, Mallar was initiated into classical music by his father, Sri Ratan Kumar Rakshit, and mother, late Tapati Rakshit at the young age of four. He later studied the sarod under Sri Supriyo Banerjee, disciple of Vidushi Annapurna Devi of the Senia-Maihar gharana. He joined ITC SRA as a General student in 2006 under sarod maestro Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta and became a Scholar in September 2009. Mallar is also taking guidance from Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya, the senior-most disciple of Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta.
Mallar was awarded the National Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in 2008. He stood first in the State Music Academy competition in 2010 and received the Ustad Alauddin Khan Memorial Award from NCPA, Mumbai. Mallar has performed at several concerts all over the country and is a ‘B’ graded artiste of All India Radio. He has recently earned his Bachelor’s degree in instrumental music from the Rabindra Bharati University, where he stood at the top of his class with a first class first.This is an excerpt from his performance during the Wednesday recital on 7th November 2012, where he was accompanied by Shri Biplab Bhattacharya on tabla.
