Acclaimed as the `First Lady of Sitar` Joya Biswas is one of India`s outstanding lady musicians, held in high esteem for more than three decades in the field of Instrumental music. A graduate in History and Economics and a diploma holder in journalism, Joya left her academic career after being awarded a cultural scholarship by the government in the early 50s.Joya became a disciple of maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar and after rigorous training under her Guru she emerged as a sitarist of outstanding merit. She has been touring abroad since 1959, her most triumphant tours being those in Russia, Poland, East and W. Germany, France, U. K. and the Festival of India programme in Russia during 1988. She gave a memorable performance in 1996 at the Nehru Centre of London to a packed Hall and was also invited to give an exclusive recital in Washington in the presence of the Indian Ambassador and a few senators. Joya has performed for French TV and the B.B.C. and has been interviewed by Channel 4. Her recent tour in Sri Lanka, sponsored by Govt of India to inaugurate a Cultural Centre in the golden Jubilee year of Indian freedom, has brought fresh laurels for her from the press and public of Sri Lanka.
Joya is attached to Radio, Television, different Universities and high powered cultural committees of both Govt. of India and West Bengal as member and advisor. She has been giving lecture recitals and has conducted workshops in various Universities of India and abroad. She has been honoured by the Calcutta High Court being selected as a Judge of People’s court. Mother Teresa honoured her with Mahila Navaratna Award in 1993 in Calcutta.
