Born in June 1952, Vijay Sardeshmukh was initiated into music by his father, late Shri Vitthalrao Sardeshmukh, a Sanskrit pandit, a vocalist and an accomplished harmonium player who accompanied the maestros of different Gharanas. Imbibing the nuances of music at an early age, Sardeshmukh later became a disciple of the late genius, Pandit Kumar Gandharva who was a good friend of his father. A well-known disciple of his guru, Sardeshmukh had the privilege of learning from him for twenty-two years. His presentation is widely recognized as very close to that of his guru, displaying the same meditative quality and exotic style. Gifted with a melodious voice, Vijay Sardeshmukh`s voice was moulded further under Kumar Gandharva`s guidance who was well versed in the science of voice culture. Two tanpuras, tuned to the highest degree of perfection, play a vital role in his music, enabling him to produce the exact Shruti required by a particular raga.
Sardeshmukh made his debut at the Swar Sadhana Conference in Pune in1974 and has performed widely since. He has been a Graded Artist of All India Radio & Doordarshan since 1977 and is currently a Guru for post graduation studies in music at Lalit Kala Kendra, Pune University. He has to his credit, numerous cassette and CD releases.
Known for his soft spoken and modest nature, Vijay Sardeshmukh is a man of few words but has boundless music within him.
