A symbol of tradition, character, integrity and
purity, Pandit Chintaman Raghunath Vyas, popularly
known as Pandit C.R.Vyas in the world of Hindustani
Classical Music, ranked among India`s leading
vocalists. Born in Osmanabad in the Marathwada region
of Maharashtra state of India, on November 9, 1924,
Pandit C.R.Vyas was groomed under the guidance of four
gurus namely, Pandit Govindrao Bhatambrekar of the
Kirana Gharana, Pandit Rajarambua Paradkar and Pandit
Mirashibua of the Gwalior Gharana and Pandit
Jagannathbua Purohit `Gunidas` of the Agra Gharana.
Assimilating the musical wealth of three gayakis, he
further enriched it by evolving a distinctively
individual vocalism of his own. Pandit Vyas |

also derived many benefits from his close association
with Pandit Ratanjankar and his eminent disciples
while working on the staff of the Bharatiya Sangeet
Shikshapeeth of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bombay.
Pandit Vyas`s vigorous and intensely musical voice was
marked by its depth and range. As a leading vocalist,
Pandit Vyas regularly featured in all the major music
conferences held in various cities and towns of India.
He had also travelled extensively out of India to
countries like England, America, Canada, Holland,
France, Afghanisthan etc. |

No less noteworthy
was his contribution as a composer of Ragas and Bandishes
under the pen name Gunijan. He had created several Ragas
like Dhankoni Kalyan, Sanjogiya, Shiv-Abhogi, to name but a
few. He had composed more than 200 `Bandishes` and had set
them to tune in well known as well as lesser known `Ragas`. |

Pandit Vyas had a
huge following and his disciples include several well-known
and younger artistes. Numerous labels have published his
music. Pandit C.R.Vyas was honoured with many prestigious
awards which included the Sangeet Natak Academy Award –
1987, Padma Bhushan – 1992, Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Award –
1994, Master Dinanath Mangeshkar Puraskar – 1999, Tansen
Samman – 1999 and many more. |

Pandit C.R.Vyas died on 10th January
2002, at Kolkata, where he had gone for a concert. His
sudden death left the music world stunned. |
