Pandit Sunil Bose
Born in Chamba State, Himachal Pradesh in 1916, Shri Sunil Bose, son of Late Dr. A. B. Bose, Chief Medical Officer of the State, was a very distinguished musician and music educator. After his initial education, he joined a Textile Engineering Course in Ahmedabad. Then in the year 1936, he joined the prestigious Marris College of Music, Lucknow, better known today as the Bhathande Music Institute, and completed his ‘Bachelor of Music’ degree.
He was under the direct tutelage of the likes of Ustad Faiyaz Khan, Dr. S. N. Ratanjankar, Shri D. T. Joshi and Ustad Ata Hussain Khan and drew inspiration from many renowned musicians of various gharanas. The combination of such illustrious associations and his rich talim launched him as a successful performer at an early age.

An `A` Class Vocalist of All India Radio, he had featured several times in the National Programmes and had participated in various music conferences in different parts of India. He served as the Head of Department (Classical Music), of the Music Teachers` Training College, Calcutta from 1959-1969.

He joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy in February 1978 as a resident expert, imparting traditional teaching and proper guidance to scholars. He retired in April 2004, as a senior guru of the Academy, who had kept the traditional values of the Agra gharana alive. The recipient of the ITC award for 2000, during his tenure, he groomed musicians like Subhra Guha (who, later went on to become a guru of the Academy as well), Jainul Abedin, Kaushik Bhattacharjee, Tushar Dutta and many others. An extremely amiable person, he was always looked upon with great affection. Pandit Sunil Bose passed away on 10th February 2007.
