Born in a family with a rich musical heritage,
Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam started her training in Carnatic music at
the age of five and appeared in her maiden concert at the age of
twelve. Vijayalakshmy has since performed widely in India and
abroad. She has conducted numerous workshops and given
lecture-demonstrations on Carnatic music. She has also presented
exclusive concerts of composers like Thyagaraja, Muthuswami
Dikshitar, Shyama Sastri, Swati Tirunal, Purandara Dasa as well as
Jayadev’s Ashtapadis. An ‘A’ graded artiste of All India Radio,
Chennai, she has performed in the prestigious Akashvani Sangeet
Sammelan concerts. In January 2005, Vijayalakshmy received the
‘Sharada Krishna Iyer Memorial Award’ for “Outstanding Performance”.
Concert Hall presents excerpts from Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam's
performance at the 33rd ITC Sangeet Sammelan, Delhi, which took
place in February, 2005. On a Sunday morning session devoted to
Carnatic music, she presented a contemplative yet powerful vocal
recital. Beginning with a varnam in Raga Vasanta set to aditala, she
went on to present compositions by the great composers Muthuswami
Dikshitar, Thyagaraja, Papanasam Sivan and Purandara Das. She
concluded with a tillana in Raga Amritavarshini set to aditala,
composed by Dr Balamurali Krishna. V. L. Kumar accompanied her on
the violin and Tiruvarur Vaidyanathan on the mridangam.
