A workshop was conducted by Pandit Suresh Talwalkar at ITC Sangeet Research Academy on 23rd and 24th September. The Taal Yogi discussed the “taala” or rhythm and its application in Hindustani Classical Music in depth with the Scholars and Accompanists of the Academy in the two-day workshop. On the first day of the workshop, the Tabla maestro discussed the nuances of “tihai” and demonstrated different ways of coming back to the “mukhra” through the completion of “bols” and “taans”. He also discussed the methods of developing a complete mastery over “layakari”.
The second day of the workshop was meant mainly for instrumentalists and Accompanists. In this session, Suresh Ji discussed the methods of improvising on “gats” along with the rhythm. He also conducted a session with the Accompanists to demonstrate the variations of Tabla accompaniment. He was accompanied by Shri Indranil Bhaduri and Shri Jayanta Sarkar on the Tabla on the first day of the workshop. On the second day of the workshop, he was accompanied Shri Ashis Paul and Shri Ashoke Mukherjee on the Tabla and Scholar of the Academy, Sudeepto Chakraborty provided him vocal support.
