Samay Raga
The ancient science of connecting ragas to the rhythms of time, seasons, and the human spirit.
The Science of Time
The time theory of Ragas is associated with the structure of feeling. A listener’s moods and emotions build the bridge between them and the Ragas. The Ragas follow their own path throughout the day, just like our mental moods do. A morning raga won't seem overly rushed. Like sunrise, it would inevitably induce a sense of peace and tranquillity. A midnight Raga, on the other hand, might feel profound and introspective. Maybe this trait helped to develop the idea of Samay Raga over time.
There are seasonal Ragas, just like Samay Ragas. Melodies like Vasant-Bahar, Hindola, Malhar, and others are evoked by seasonal charms. Since each of these ragas is connected to a particular season, its temperament is represented.

Understanding the philosophy behind Samay Raga
The Philosophy
The association of ragas with time is not arbitrary. It's rooted in the ancient understanding of how different swaras (notes) interact with the natural world. Each raga's melodic structure is designed to evoke specific emotions that align with the time of day.
The Science
Research suggests that the body's circadian rhythms respond to specific note frequencies. The ragas played at dawn, for example, often feature the komal (flat) notes that create a calm, meditative state — perfect for the transition from sleep to waking.
The Experience
For listeners, the beauty of Samay Raga lies in its ability to create a profound connection between the music and the moment. When you hear a morning raga at sunrise, or a night raga under the stars, the experience is transformative and deeply moving.
The Legacy
This tradition has been passed down through generations of gurus and scholars at ITC SRA. Today, our artists continue to honor this ancient knowledge, bringing the timeless power of Samay Raga to audiences around the world.
